Myopia (nearsightedness)

myopia cause

There can be two causes for myopia.

The first cause of myopia happens when your eyeball grows too long from front to back.

It is characterized by blurring of objects viewed at a distance, and is commonly the result of abnormal elongation of the eyeball – which causes the refractive image formed by the cornea and the lens to fall in front of the photoreceptors of the retina

It has been reported that a lack of daylight exposure (Not getting enough outdoor exposure) is strongly associated with excessive elongation of the eyeball.

The second cause for nearsightedness happens when there are problems with the shape of your cornea (clear front layer of the eye) or lens (an inner part of the eye that helps the eye focus).

Keratoconus is a condition that causes the cornea (the clear surface on the front of the eye) to gradually thin and bulge into a cone shape. The cone-shaped cornea usually causes myopia and astigmatism, resulting in blurry and distorted vision.

Farsightedness or Hyperopia

Hyperopia also called farsightedness is caused when the shape of the eye makes light focus behind the retina (a light sensitive layer of tissue at the back of your eye), instead of on it. Farsightedness is a refractive error that makes nearby objects look blurry.

Please consult our page about Farsightedness causes, symptoms and treatments in Addis Ababa to learn more.

Presbyopia

The main cause of Presbyopia is aging

Presbyopia is a refractive error that makes it hard for middle-aged and older adults to see things up close.

It happens because the lens (an inner part of the eye that helps the eye focus) stops focusing light correctly on the retina (a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye).

Please consult our page about Presbyopia causes, symptoms and treatments in Addis Ababa to learn more.

Cataract

Cataract usually occurs due to aging as people grow over the age of 40.

A cataract is a cloudy lens. The lens is positioned behind the colored part of your eye (iris). The lens focuses light that passes into your eye, producing clear, sharp images on the retina — the light-sensitive membrane in the eye that functions like the film in a camera.

Please consult our page about cataract causes, symptoms and treatments in Addis Ababa to learn more.

Trachoma

Trachoma is caused by bacteria named Chlamydia trachomas.

This eye disease is contagious, spreading through contact with the eyes, eyelids, and nose or throat secretions of infected people. Trachoma may cause mild itching and irritation of your eyes and eyelids. Then you may notice swollen eyelids and pus draining from the eyes.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused due to damages to the optic nerve.

Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive eye disease. Progressively, glaucoma leads to visual field loss. One of the major risk factors is eye pressure. An abnormality in the eye’s drainage system can cause fluid to build up, leading to excessive pressure that causes damage to the optic nerve.

Eye infections

There can be three causes to eye infection.

The first cause is bacteria.

The clinical signs and eye disease symptoms of inflammation of the eyes along with pus are frequently caused by bacteria.

The second cause for eye infections is fungi.

Fungal eye infections are very rare, but they can be serious, where the infections can potentially lead to permanent vision issues, including blindness.

The third cause is viruses.

It happens when blood vessels in the conjunctiva, the thin outermost membrane surrounding your eyeball, become infected by bacteria or a virus.

As a result, your eyes become pink or red, and inflamed. It can also result from allergies or exposure to chemicals, like chlorine, in swimming pools.

Blindness

Blindness is a lack of vision. It may also refer to a loss of vision that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Partial blindness means you have very limited vision. Complete blindness means you cannot see anything and do not see light. (Most people who use the term “blindness” mean complete blindness.)

Causes

  • age-related macular degeneration
  • diabetic retinopathy
  • Uncorrected refractive errors.

Color Blindness

The most common kinds of color blindness are genetic.

If you have color blindness, it means you see colors differently than most people. Most of the time, color blindness makes it hard to tell the difference between certain colors.

Usually, color blindness runs in families. There’s no cure for color blindness, but special glasses and contact lenses can help.

Dry eye

Dry eye happens when your eyes don’t make enough tears to stay wet, or when your tears don’t work correctly.

This can make your eyes feel uncomfortable, and in some cases it can also cause vision problems. Dry eye is common.

Common causes of dry eye are : Aging, certain medical conditions including Sjogren’s syndrome, allergic eye disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, graft vs. host disease, sarcoidosis, thyroid disorders or vitamin A deficiency.
